Little FYI for (indie) game developers..
There is nothing wrong with using store bought / free assets for your game
️
I often hear from developers that it's not okay because everything has to be "unique" and while I do get that..
...having a good game is way more important.
99.99991% of the players who play your game are not developers and do not know / reconize it's store assets
There is a reason people spend a lot of time creating those assets, REAL artwork, pay them for it..

Ofc there is also the other side where a game is store assets alone without any modification and I am fully against this
It's called an "asset flip" and it gives developers who are using assets for their game a bad name..
There is a LOT to game development, do not underestimate that stuff lol

@stux Sounds like people taking J. Stephanie Sterling too far. Some years ago, they coined the term "asset flip" for a "game" made by buying a pre-made level and selling it as-is as a new game, rather than building something on it. The Internet being what it is, a whole lot of people started using it for any game that had any store-bought models, textures, or sounds, or even when devs reüse stuff they made themselves for other projects.

For my current MMO game I use store-assets alone since I am not a 3D artist (yet)
I got them on sale so everything has a licence as it should!
On the other hand, EVERY single function is written from scratch, no templates, no plugins, all my code

@stux The entire Doom scene revolves around reused assets. Granted, it's a bit of a different situation, but what wins in the end is the gameplay.

@stux Sell out. I bet you also use a compiler that you didn't write from scratch, on a CPU that you didn't carve out of sand by hand.
