Lola Falafel has discovered a new trick, and I swear she's getting endless amusement from tormenting me with it.

I spend a *lot* of time on the Mirra chair in front of the studio computer, but I inevitably need to get up for one thing or another … tea, a snack, my phone – for a quick photo like this one – 

and that’s when Lola makes her move, and appropriates the empty chair. She *knows* I don’t have the stomach to oust her from it (just look at that smirk)

so I get a little stool from the bedroom to hunch at the desk with, and wheel her chair out of the way.

Once I’ve been sitting again for a few minutes, she loses interest and goes looking for a sunny spot to lie down. This happens two or three times a day.

I’m convinced she knows exactly what she’s doing – she’s very fast. I don’t even need to leave the room to lose my seat.

The UPS man arrived late today, with some decor for the last remaining blank space on my studio’s front wall.

a. Lola was immediately quite fond of the Ring of Destiny.

The ring came from Poland, and passed through Koeln – or Cologne – Germany (yes, where Keith Jarrett recorded The Köln Concert … my favorite album) on the way to the States. I think that’s very cool.

b. Unfortunately, the folks at another little Etsy store screwed up the patina on the right wing … I already wrote saying I want to return it for retouching, or get a replacement. No word until Monday, probably.

c. “One to beam down, Mr. Scott.”

22 years ago, I invested in a Herman Miller Mirra office chair for my studio.

It seemed like a lot at the time, but it really was the best thing I could have done for my back. My spine would be a wreck if I hadn’t.

Tens of thousands of studio hours later, the chair is in perfect condition mechanically … but I’ve replaced the armpads twice,

and while my back is fine, the *chair’s* back was showing its age. There was an 8-inch tear in the plastic mesh,

and the connecter for one of the rear supports had broken, forcing me to epoxy it in place.

I decided it was time to reinvest in the future, and replace the damaged parts.

Yesterday, I put on the fourth set of armpads, and replaced the old charcoal shadow-colored back with a spiffy new Citron version.

It took some doing … I had to take a chisel to the epoxy …  but the chair feels like it’s new again.

I hadn’t realized just how much the back support had been degraded; the aged plastic had gotten floppy, and the tear left it unbalanced.

But it feels great now! It really is like new, and my back can really tell the difference. I’m hoping I can get another five or so years out of the seat assembly, and then I’ll replace it, too.

Herman Miller can consider me a very satisfied customer! IMHO, it’s far better to pay more up front for something that lasts, than to replace and throw away an inferior product every few years.
