Just used the phrase “piecrust promise” and then thought, hang on, is that a phrase that anyone uses outside my family of origin?! Does anyone else know what it means?

Last boost - “you can get whatever you want delivered just about anywhere”. I bet there are great swathes of rural America that are not covered by the big meal delivery services. The idea of reliance on the likes of UberEats is predicated on living in an urban area.

I went to the library for the first time since I started my PhD and checked out 5 books on research methods. As I attempted to leave the building I triggered the alarm. I walked to the information desk to ask if I’d done something incorrectly when checking the books out.

“Is one of them an interlibrary loan?” the information guy I asked. I confirmed that it was. “Oh, then it will set the alarm off because we can’t disable the tag if it’s not our book.”

“So… I just walk out? Even though it will trigger the alarm?”

“Yeah.”

I walked out. The alarm sounded. I kept walking. No one challenged me or asked to check the books I had in my bag.

So… what is the point of the sensors, tags and alarms? I mean I could just take any book and walk out without being questioned. Free books for everyone! Make it make sense

In the break in my deep work session I went out into the garden to capture the very last flowers from the summer. We haven’t had much of a cold snap yet so they’ve lasted well #bloomscrolling

Well I’ve been for a very easy run then I’ve been to the dentist and had my cyst/abscess or whatever it is drained which was quite painful. Soft food for dinner. Review in one week.

I got an email saying I’ve been accepted as the PhD student rep on the psychology department equity, diversity and inclusion working group! This is exciting and a great way to meet people in the wider department. First meeting some time before the end of October.
