@hpod16 @realcaseyrollins and to your point, that's probably a good reason for not having fully fledged 'DMs'.
I also don't like people popping in my inbox uninvited...

@realcaseyrollins @hpod16 they are indeed, or an equivalent of them. They're like any other post/reply, only restricted between the 2 (or more) participants and not e2e encrypted.
The issue is that most users are looking for a 'DM' or 'Message' button and struggle to understand that this is how you 'privately' message someone.
@realcaseyrollins @hpod16 this are the top ones that I observed:
- Server selection onboarding. This is number one, you'll find plenty of posts online with confused users. Though Mastodon works on improving it soon it seems.
- Limited search and discovery (bottlenecked by the server)
- Broken uploads because of dead CDNs
- Confusing 'DM' feature
These all make sense to me and are ok, but casual Joe will struggle.
@hpod16 the world was not built in a day
and there's certainly more interest from EU users these days, which is great!
@hpod16 I agree
I ended up on Reddit rabbit holes and documentation pages to learn some things. This user type will however not search and if they can't ask their friends or family for help, they give up.
Still, steps are taken to make this process more user friendly, which is great!
@hpod16 the problem is that the same people that don't know will run into lots of UX issues when trying Fediverse. I know a few sadly...
@cstross Starlink might be the only thing one of his companies got right. I've been using one for a while now and it's a game changer when living somewhere remote. I wish we had a suitable EU competitor and not have to contribute to this man's lunacy...
