  • Reminder that in the UK in 1900, before mass vaccination for childhood diseases began, 20% of all babies died before their fifth birthday (from diseases we currently vaccinate them against).

@aSweetGentleman @cstross My aunt convinced my diabetic uncle that what he needed was a series of wacky diets and to make sure to wear his magnetic bead bracelet instead of regular glucose monitoring and insulin. He died by inches having bits cut off him regularly. If he'd listened to normal doctors instead of engaged with quackery, it is likely he'd still be alive now. Worst decline and death I've personally witnessed. I have a raging hate for snake oil peddlers.

@morgan @suzannealdrich @cstross These people lived in gold encrusted marble palaces, wore the finest clothing, never lacked for a warm fire and ate the best foods and had the best doctors of their era. It didn't save any of them. What would have saved them are a series of inexpensive, widely available childhood immunizations with extremely high safety profiles.

@morgan @suzannealdrich @cstross And this sort of thing cut across all divisions of class and wealth. I was at Versailles last week and they had an exhibition about the Grand Dauphin and his family. The Grand Dauphin was the heir apparent to Louis XIV for most of his life, but his father outlived him. He died of smallpox at about the age of 50. A bunch of the dauphin's children and their wives and grandchildren were wiped out by "just measles" and other maladies.

@suzannealdrich @cstross Oh, I could continue to share stories about ancestors who died from contagious diseases for hours.

One of my great grandfathers who caught the Spanish Flu died of it and he was in his twenties and the very picture of health. Was the captain of his basketball team and played several other sports as well. He looked like an Olympic athlete. Didn't save him.

This idea of just letting disease run wild to somehow produce a race of supermen is just bonkers.

@cstross The depression lingered for years and my grandmother had to be nursed and brought up by others in the family. Mae only got a foot stone, but others received less. Search Larson for that cemetery and see how many are simply listed as baby boy or baby girl Larson. The choice is between vaccination or caskets. It is that stark.

@cstross Here is one I know the story of personally. It is my great aunt who died shortly before turning three of a long and torturous bout of measles that left her sick and in bed for three months before succumbing. My great grandma was pregnant with my grandmother at the time and was so deeply depressed after her daughter's death that my great grandfather built a casket for her to be ready.

@cstross @Richard_Littler I'm imagining something like the Shandor building in the original Ghostbusters film, where the architecture makes it part of a summoning gateway.

It's a real building, too, though somewhat altered via film magic for the movie.

  • PSA: I’m turning 55 next month, and there’s an issue with people who got vaccinated for measles around the same time I did as a kid having waning immunity.
    InfoseepageI Infoseepage

@overholt Got an MMR booster last fall (2024) as well. With overall population vaccination levels being too low to stop outbreaks, the next best option is for those who are vaccinated to ensure their immune response is strong and not waned over multiple decades.

@stux The two people onboard shut down the engines and exited the plane and did not require medical attention. The video only says that there "reportedly" was a pressurization issue, not that there was one and the statement is unattributed. This sure strikes me as a potentially orchestrated stunt/market manipulation.
