Good morning Fedi friends and happy Monday!
Since I haven't done much self-hosting-wise lately (more on this another time) I decided to... jailbreak my old Kindle(s)!
I was a little terrified to be honest. But the whole process took LESS THAN A MINUTE.
So after my spare Kindle (a 5th gen from 2012), I'm on to my main one (a 4th gen from 2011, my oldest gadget that I still use daily).
Later this week I will "liberate" my audiobooks!

I had an epiphany while walking with my daughter to the park this morning.
The number one reason why I would never resort to #AI / a #LLM to write something for me is that these models completely squash any individuality, the sum of all your life experiences and viewpoints. What makes you, *you*.
What I find so dangerous is the homogenization of thinking that they bring about. A pastiche of vanilla thoughts, cobbled together at random.
No LLM could possibly write for me... even if I used a prompt that asked it to write in my style, providing links to previous articles.
My little one is only 4 but it breaks my heart that she's growing up in a world where these tools are totally normalized. How they're upending higher education and so many aspects of life.
We didn't have a choice, the introduction of these tools arrived all of a sudden, without any guardrails in place. And now they're here.
When the time comes, we'll have this talk. I find it essential.

I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/
In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.
I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).
The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. I am endlessly grateful for it, so this is my contribution to the cause

The video is up on my self-hosted PeerTube instance (thank you @yunohost) and for now it is unlisted as I have no idea how my VPS will hold up. I also included an alternate location in the blog post.
I hope you'll enjoy it! It's been a real labor of love (a month of full time work on it)... I see it as my love letter to the fediverse
