phase 2 is requiring everyone to use an approved vpn aka government "gateway".

because right now, you can access the internet via all kinds of entry pints - from your broadband at home, to your 4G mobile, to the cafe wifi, etc and it makes it a little less convenient to surveil you.

much easier if all your traffic goes through the approved ID-verifying gateway.

AI has been used extensively in the genocide of Palestine.

AI is increasingly being used in the US by ICE.

In the UK and EU governments have exempted the military and law enforcement from any AI regulation that might apply to normal civilian use.

As you say - things will get very very bad before normal citizens wake up to the tyranny and injustice of pervasive surveillance and automation.

many people have suggested ideas such as

* mandatory transparency to ensure rogue admins are held to account

* public statstistics on admin behaviour incl GDPR complaince

* users having a right to a second binding opinion

* voting in supervisory groups / committees to balance rogue admins

* ... etc etc

but the aristocracy always ignore such ideas

the fediverse conferences as a result are very much self-congratulatory

What I'm hearing is that there is zero mechanism for holding admins/owners to account. How convenient.

and also "go find another server" is like "this restaurant is racist? go elsewhere". it puts the onus on the victim not the perpetrator

ive heard from several people who have not been emailed a reason

(I too on previous servers had my account disabled completely with no reason and no response from the admin/owner, and also no reply for GDPR requests given they were based in the EU)

How can a mastodon user tell if their account is "hidden" or "limited" ?

I see this a lot with accounts I want to follow.

1. Can admins do this without notifying the user?

2. Is it possible to see the reason accounts have been censored?

If the answers to any of these two questions is "no" then it seems mastodon is subject to abuse from biased/rogue admins and moderators.
