and today i had a new idea: what if i used vana'diel instead? (the world of ff11)
i wouldn't have to change much there, because i already like that world a lot and it has plenty of well-documented details!

could use ff1's quest too: just instead of restoring the 4 crystals, you could save/restore the 6 celestial avatars!

will think more about this ^^

Though in FFXI's case, there would certainly be complications...

      * There are actually *eight* celestial avatars. Odin's crystal once existed in Beaucedine Glacier, but shattered at some point prior to the Crystal War (possibly *long* before), and since then he wound up in Aht Urghan. Then there's Alexander, who may or may not have ever had a crystal and seems contained in Alzadaal Undersea Ruins (or maybe just the Nyzul Isle portion thereof).

        * The elemental protocrystals don't seem to be a natural phenomenon, but created by the Kuluu back in the day to contain gods that were growing dangerous and prone to fighting one another instead of keeping harmony as the world continued to fall from grace. (Compare Abyssea, where copies of the avatars roam free as NMs, and probably only don't fight each other because of Abyssea being so fragmented they can't reach each other.)

So "saving the elemental crystals" in Vana'diel's case might be less restoring lost power necessary to keep the world stable, and more keeping them from shattering and releasing dangerous free-roaming superbosses!

@pteryx yes, i know all that.
was gonna focus on the 6, because they are found on mindartia and quon, and because odin + alex work differently.

Though Odin didn't *always* work differently, to judge by CoP cutscenes. He represents what's at stake if things go wrong... and the challenge of recrystallizing him could serve as final boss material.

(Alex, though, does seem implied to have always worked differently. Olduum had different means of containment they employed than the Kuluu.)

Who said it needed to be set in ancient times? It'd just involve rediscovering ancient secrets...

(Of note, the D&D campaign I'm in happened to have rediscovery of ancient secrets as a significant element... and ripped off FF8 means of seeing the past to do it.)

@pteryx well either way, i don't really wanna deal with odin+alex anyways and focus on the 6 others.
and all this is just a brief idea i had yesterday, that will require way more work anyways.
