I have been trying to find this h sandwich recipe my mom used to make all the time for me as a kid so that I can attempt to veganize it!
It was this ham and cheese slider recipe, usually these types of sandwiches could potentially be seen at mormon funerals/gatherings (at least most of the ones I was drug to
. These ham and cheese sliders were made with ham, I think some sort of white cheese (maybe swiss?), slider bread, and the piece of resistance was the sauce. Ohā¦ The sauceā¦ Its like this Mayonnaise with herbs in it I think. Maybe parsley? Oregano? I have no idea but this sauce made the sandwich. Paired with the whatever cheese the sandwich made it so moistā¦ The sauce made the sandwhich a sweetish savory.Again I have no idea the name of the sandwich, looking up sandwich ham & cheese sliders just gives meā¦ Sliders with melted cheese and ham. Idk if any of the ingredients I listed are correct, itās just what it looked/tasted like (from memory)
Iām pretty sure you bake these sliders with the sauce and everything put together, my mom would always pull out cookie sheets/ pans from the oven full of them.

It does sound like a croque monsieur though, as another person pointed out ā could the sauce youāre thinking of be bĆ©chamel?

Did you try āaioliā in the search to make sure youāre getting results with the sauce? It basically means fancy flavored mayo, and I see tons of ham and swiss slider on hawaiian roll recipes searching with that.

I was looking at this wiki page and it didnāt really look familiar, so I looked up a slider version:

This looks the most like it however we never poured the sauce and cheese on top of the bread (at least to my limited child memory and interpretation). Maybe my mom would do it differently but she would make the sauce (the sauce contained thyme I am pretty sure just like this sandwich) ans spreadit on the rolls, then put ham, cheese, then top bun.
I was wrong about the cookie sheet now that I am remembering, I think she would wrap them individually in tinfoil and toss them in the oven. I have memories of cheesy tinfoily goodness.

When I look at the recipe it kind of looks familiar, all of the bĆ©chamel sauces I have looked up look kind of similar they just seem to lack rhe amount of herbs (parsley/thyme) that i remember seeping out the side of the sliders. (It wasnāt like the sauce was green it was still whit just lots of green flecks from memory)
I also misrecalled it being cooked on a cookie sheet/pan. I remember my mom individually wrapped these suckers in tin foil (maybe moreso for transport and eas of access at these gatherings). At least that is what I recall (sorry my memory is shit
) maybe they were in a pan sometimes.The other main Issue I see with this sandwich is we never put cheese and sauce on top of the bread to make it crispy. Who knows though my mom was known for altering recipes to her liking, and we just grew up with it being the norm. Like my momās tuna noodle caserole was made with canned chicken instead of tuna because she hates the tastw and smell of fish

Perhaps itās some sort of ham and cheese sliders on sweet Hawaiian rolls? Iāve made these before and theyāre delicious. The Hawaiian rolls give it a sweetness especially if you use a honey ham, and you brush them with a garlic butter and cover with foil to bake, then bake uncovered for the last ~10 min to get a slight browning on top. I suggest you try experimenting with different sauces by adding different herbs to mayo (& mustard if you like) until it fits your liking. Personally, I love to put pickle slices in my ham and cheese sliders ā or pickled jalapenos if Iām feeling spicier!
It may not be the exact same thing your mom made, but trust me these are worth trying

Yes! These are definitely funeral sandwiches - the sauce is usually melted butter mixed with worcestershire, dijon mustard, and herbs (thyme/parsley) that gets poured over the assembled sliders before baking, which is why theyāre so damn moist and flavorful.
