wolverine is 100% just a barbarian with a Canadian accent
-
I agree, play the class how you want, it’s one of the major appeals of the game. But a ranger built for archery is a lot of fun to play.

Happy cake day!

Many people see the word “range” inside of “ranger” and mindlessly assume that it must mean they do ranged attacks. But actually, the word ranger is originally the past tense of the word “ringer”, so they’re the guy who you temporarily brought into your party to win some bet, but then they stuck around afterwards and became a permanent member.
-
You already said he was a barbarian. No need to be redundant.

Bardin’s job was literally ranger.

Either it’s actual wolverines or I need to read more comics.

not sure if you were being serious or something, but that’s straight incorrect.

"gamekeeper, sworn officer of a forest whose work is to walk through it and protect it,"… See origin and meaning of ranger.

You don’t need to look up any etymology because the word “ringer” is plainly a noun and so it doesn’t have a past tense. I really thought the joke was so obvious that it wouldn’t need any explanation, especially when posting to a memes community that would be expecting jokes.

Yeah I was surprised to see the down votes, that was some top notch shitposting

To be fair, Aragorn was no slouch with that bow when they were fighting their way out of the Mines of Moria. Maybe he was an archer all along who just got overshadowed by Legolas and spec’d late into longsword to be a good party member.
-
Aragorn is an archer. Most shots of him fighting focus on swordfighting though because it allows danger to be closer.

Rangers should have things that help at range. Ergo, Sorcerers and Wizards that cast Magic Missile are rangers.

Imma make a PC that’s a Yosemite National Park Ranger who is very confused about how they ended up in Faerun.

*ahem*
^RANGERS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE RACIST^

I would sometimes shake things up and go mostly staff with a sling. The sling is hilariously entertaining on many fronts. It’s not really a big damage weapon, but with called shots life gets fun. Headshots? Yup. Knocking out guards? Indeed. Breaking that vial of potion to release the spell/fog/acid? Bingo.
Sneaking a ranged weapon into town? Have fun with that heavy crossbow, I’m just wrapping the sling around as a belt. Ammo? Sling stones are fabricated, but any old rock can improvise.
While the longbow / longsword ranger is just classicly awesome, a sling / (something) is worth giving a try.
Next up: atlatl barbarian!

Brian below linked the etymology - but a ranger for Tolkien was pretty close to a park ranger: someone who wandered the woods keeping things safe.
