#JustFinished Circular Motion by Alex FosterPerhaps the most gorgeous ecodystopia book I've ever read; this is the story of the Earth's sixth mass extinction written in the lives of a handful of people just trying to live meaningful lives. Foster's writing was lyrical and he built some gorgeous suspense in a few of the scenes. I felt really connected on an emotional level with the main characters. #Justfinished Imago by Octavia ButlerI dunno. This one really fell flat for me. More about heirarchy being the issue with humanity. With some racism is rooted in genetics thrown in. And while the thing with the aliens being able to calm people with pheromones was kind of cool in the first book, by the third, and in our current slide into patriachical violence again, it just felt wrong. #JustFinished (again) Children of Time by Adrian TchaikovskyI had forgotten what a beautiful, hopeful ending Tchaikovsky gave us. As a life-long arachnophobe, I might not have ever read this book if I had known about the alien species. I am so glad I didn't know, as the book is truly excellent. Tchaikovsky's love of many-legged things shines through and allows us to feel it with him. (To some extent; he doesn't work ACTUAL miracles.)#SFF #SciFi #books #bookstodon

#JustFinished Slow Gods by Clare NorthI read this twice in a row. I felt like I didn't give it the gravity it deserved the first time. This is largely a treatise on the limited but grand power of love and acceptance with a realistic exploration of what lies outside it.Or, a pilot who should be mad runs around known space as a natural disaster unfolds. He grows from a lost, bewildered, callous boy into ... well, more. You'll need to read it to find out.#SciFi #books #bookstodon #SFF

Interestingly, there was a lot of talk about the pacing during the book club meeting. Apparently, many people don't like it. I recognize there was ebb and flow and it wasn't the usual way to do it. Personally, I saw it as rebuilding the tension and leaving us to steep in the mystery of what was happening.
