I mostly know the German apartment rental market from the tenant side. Finding an apartment was always a pain, especially since I frequently had to move to distant parts of Germany. However, after inheriting an apartment five years ago(*), I also gained a perspective from the landlord side. I put out an ad for the apartment on Wednesday morning, and so far 23 people have expressed an interest, and 13 people have confirmed an appointment for viewing the apartment. While having this many prospective tenants to choose from is technically great from a landlord perspective, it's also a bummer. No matter how this plays out, I have to dash the hopes of at least 12 people. And German political leaders are largely uninterested in improving the situation for tenants.(*) I plan to use it for my retirement when I get older, and am using the rent to pay off the mortgage I took on when I paid off the co-heir.#housing #landlords

Attention citizens:There is no housing shortage in Alpha Complex. There is merely an overabundance of citizens. This is a simple logistics problem with simple solutions. Please stand by for population adjustment initiatives.#ttrpg #paranoia #housing

@Craig it’s not a ban per se, but you need multiple permits and licenses, it has to be your primary residence, you need your property inspected by the city, you need to keep a guest registry, you need to submit quarterly reports, you have to collect sales and room taxes, etc. Essentially, they made it a giant PITA. Fines for violations are $1K per day!
