    "Google handed over a trove of personal data about a student and journalist to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in response to a subpoena that had not been approved by a judge.

    The search giant provided ICE with the usernames, physical addresses, and an itemized list of services associated with the Google account of Amandla Thomas-Johnson, a British student and journalist who attended a pro-Palestinian protest in 2024.

    Google also turned over Thomas-Johnson’s IP addresses, phone numbers, subscriber numbers and identities, and credit card and bank account numbers linked to his account."

                @jalefkowit If a company can share so much data without a judge’s approval, what does that mean for user trust?
                Privacy shouldn’t depend on who asks for the data.

                    @jalefkowit ICE and Google to of my least favorite entities.

                    I adore them as much as Microsoft, proprietary (antifeature) software

                    Which is to say they are all a cancer.

                    I hate Microsoft ie... so you get the idea.

                      @jalefkowit

                      afaik:

                      The real legal problem in the US is the so-called Third-Party Doctrine. Put simply, it states that if you voluntarily give your data to a third party (Google, apple, MS, Disney, Netflix, bank, phone company or any else), you no longer have a "reasonable right to privacy" from the state. Therefore, the government often doesn't need a court order for this data.
