    cannot say this enough:

    i knew of Chomsky first as a linguist, so it always struck me as odd that USA’s “Left” paraded him as the second coming of Marx. notwithstanding his books and articles about USA imperialism, compared to other “white guys in academia” like Howard Zinn and Noel Ignatiev, Chomsky never seemed to be a danger to the establishment.

    this photo of him with #JeffreyEpstein in the Lolita Express depicts perfectly what my guts screamed: he’s well-paid, controlled opposition.

      @blogdiva

      I have outgrown Chomsky long ago. This confirms that this is a good thing

            For a particular slice of the Santa Cruz and East Bay left in the 90s, it seemed he could do no wrong for quite a while.

              @blogdiva he was never really an activist or political actor. He was an academic and offered some valuable analysis and commentary, particularly compared to MSM. He no doubt benefited from being a white guy from so-called prestigious academic institutions and this crowded out many smarter and more insightful folks who lacked those “qualifications”.

                    @blogdiva

                    His writing always came across as grossly patronizing and know it all to me. I checked out some of his language developement theories a long time ago because it was an area of interest to me. He traveled a linear path based on some narrow assumptions about what humans are, cloaked in cultural superiority, to reach his conclusions. My definition of stupid. I expect that style was confirming to a certain class of readers. I never bothered with anything else of his that was recomended to me. Why waste my time.

                        @blogdiva "Controlled opposition" sounds like a conspiracy theory, except now it's extremely obvious that's exactly what happened. Now I'm wondering how much more there was to that story than just Chomsky.

                        Chomsky was a model for the US left for decades: criticize, but self-censor. In the end that makes you just an extra spicy character on The West Wing.
