Let me tell you what the consensus was on Gen 6 consoles upon release.
PS2 was super basic. It's what people got when they thought, "Get a console." No shade in it. I own lots of PS2 games to this day.
PC was the land of FPS, RTS, sims, adventure games, and shareware titles. Games there were so much different from what you'd typically get on console, it might as well be a different planet.
Dreamcast was not the hipster console. It was for hardcore SEGA fans. SEGA used to be a big deal, but Sony took that player base away. Nevertheless, when the Dreamcast first launched, it sold out.
GameCube is weird because, yes, it was the kiddy console. But Nintendo tried really hard to appeal to "mature" gamers with titles like Geist and Killer 7. So it occupied this strange place for kids and hipsters.
Xbox was the weird console. So many games were either PC ports or games that would only later be ported to PC. It wasn't really known for sports games yet. It was mostly known for Halo, Project Gotham Racing, SEGA games, and RPGs. But not JRPGs, Western RPGs like Fable, Sudeki, and Enclave. So in many ways, Xbox was the most hipster of consoles because traditional console gamers didn't know what to think about it. -

I think it's associated with Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive aswell.

@KitsuneVixi Yeah, sorry, that’s what I was thinking about: Project Gotham Racing.
