I watched the Critical Role announcement from their live show at GenCon. As much as I like Brennan Lee Mulligan, I have mixed feelings that he's taking over the DM/GM chair from Matthew Mercer for Campaign 4, even if Mercer is going to be a player. I hope everyone else is still a player - that was left ambiguous - as, with the exception of Robbie Daymond, their long term guests haven't held my attention for long (something that happened frequently in EXU and C3).

It's also interesting that they haven't publicly committed to which game system their going to use in C4. They even ambiguously referred to BLM's position as both DM and GM. Will it be Daggerheart or will it be 5e D&D? I care less about C4 not being set in Exandria - I feel it's kind of played out if I'm going to be honest.

@Tim_Eagon I think Matt needs a break. No inside track, just guessing. He has put his heart and soul into this dream, and now he needs some rest.

@Tim_Eagon As someone who has mostly not had time to listen to CR in recent years (I've finished C1 and the early part of C2) seeing Matt as a player would be something I might go out of my way to watch.

@George_Kimberly Forever DMing is hard enough when you're not the creative head of a growing media empire.

@benrob0329 You can watch Matt as a player in the EXU campaigns DM'd by Aabria Iyengar. He plays Dariax, a dwarven cleric.

@Tim_Eagon as someone who missed the rot role hype for years, and who has been catching up (halfway through c1), _and_ is taking a break from it to try out dimension 20 (the one where Matt Mercer is playing a whiny villain)…
I think it’ll be great.

@Tim_Eagon I’m personally a bit disappointed. I like Brennan, but I get him as DM on Worlds Beyond Number. I’d prefer to keep Matt as DM, or, if he needs a break, to bring in a fresh voice.

He also played in the final of the three short prequel campaigns: Calamity, Downfall, and Divergence. All three are worth watching, and it is almost certainly this chemistry that clinched the deal for Brennan.
I would argue that his involvement in CR has given new life and new audiences to Dropout.

@b4ux1t3 It's nothing against BLM or D20, it's just that the chemistry of the original cast is so good...

@jdr42 Bringing someone fresh would be a tall order. It has to be an experienced, recognizable DM/GM who can pull off a long term campaign on camera, and who is familiar or liked by the Critters.

@George_Kimberly @benrob0329 Quite frankly, I expect Critical Role and D20/Dropout to merge at some point.
