I'm skeptical of "social media algorithms are designed to be addictive to minors" because clearly these people have never seen, e.g., the way old white people are hooked on Fox News and shit.

Never mind that these adults have made sure there's nowhere else for young people to socialize, especially in groups.
Lately it's started edging toward "MAHA" wellness bullshit and Democrats' queerphobic and puritanical obsession with censoring and destroying the Internet "for the kids."

"They're on their phones all the time!"

Stop letting pedophile billionaires own social media and everything else, tax them out of existence, and give us proper privacy protections.

It's just really rich coming from people who sat in front of the TV all day deep frying their brains in that bullshit instead.

@gwynnion On the plus side, algorithms have been used for evil a lot. So if this leads to more non-algorithmic social media, that wouldn't be a bad thing.
Whenever I hear, "save the children", I assume bad motives.

@Lightfighter Yeah. It's not that I love Facebook or anything -- and the middle aged people addicted to Facebook are a bigger problem by far in my opinion -- but a lot of terrible things are being done in the name of "the children" and it makes me automatically suspicious.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social My conspiracy theory is that a lot of the push behind banning the internet is from the TV networks and newspaper publishers who hate not having a monopoly on mass communication. I notice no policymakers are proposing "age verification" to read the NYT or watch Fox News and it makes me suspicious.
