Spoke to a self-described conspiracy theorist last night.
So I asked him, “What if the biggest conspiracy theory is that the U.S. government deliberately spreads conspiracy theories?”
That was apparently too much. He blinked, then scoffed: “Why would the government ever do that?”
So I told him, “Same reason the Wizard of Oz pretended to be great and powerful—because the truth was, he wasn’t.”
Still too implausible for him. So I pressed: “Why is it always the American government behind the big conspiracies? Why not Canada? Mexico? Mongolia? Why is the central message always that the U.S. government is omnipotent, omniscient, the puppetmaster of the entire world?”
He brushed it off, but I could see it landed. Just enough to rattle something.
