      > Germany (which has the best Christmas markets)

      Is this unironic, or is there something that those of us who have never been to a German Christmas market don't know?

        @kdgregory @cstross It’s not just because Edinburgh has a particularly shit Christmas market, part of which pretends to be German. The nearest the UK has to the German experience is probably Manchester.

        If you’ve never experienced the real thing, and you don’t mind crowds, Cologne has particularly magical Christmas markets. Nuremberg is the big touristy one. Berlin has massive diversity, and Dortmund is absolutely the typical market, with the biggest tree. Some places have mediaeval markets.

          When I lived in Aachen, its Christmas market was always full of British tourists - because it was the closest one to the UK. They'd arrive with overnight buses on Saturday morning, and leave with the same buses on Sunday evening.

            Did that swamp the market for locals, or did it also run during the week?

              @clew

              Most Christmas markets in Germany are all-week affairs during the Advent period.
