My old 2008-era metric for when it is time to buy a video game console is as follows:

When there are no less than *five* unique titles that you are interested in playing. Not ports. Not backcomp library. Console-native exclusive titles.

Until you hit five, keep your powder dry.

I've broken with this guidance once, for my original Nintendo Switch, which I did not regret. I am adhering to it for Switch 2, though, because that price tag slows my roll all on its own.

It really does drive home though how, six months into its release, the Switch 2 really does rely on being "...and also a Nintendo Switch" as part of its value proposition. The library for it so far is otherwise kinda teeny.

@valthonis True. We also have to remember the thing released in June. It's been less than a year!

@jenny753 This is mostly me being impatient to have an excuse buy the damn thing, which I clearly want, without feeling like I'm just getting the new shiny object in the grass, which at this point is all I'd basically have. 😉

@jenny753 That's all based on my personal calculus, however... complicated by the functioning Switch and library I already have. Any other given human's gonna have different variables and weights to plug into the decision.

@valthonis I don't disagree with you. It also feels like some of these early games, particularly with third parties, are having trouble shaking things out.

Even the recent Animal Crossing update for Switch 2 had a couple of oddities. At the same time, even if this first year can be summed up as "Switch but with higher resolution and more stable frame rates", I'm glad I got the thing.

I imagine that's how a lot of PS5 owners feel...
