To add to that: my ship-of-Theseus computer is probably older than quite a few adult Lemmy users. All current pieces are relatively new, as last year I felt like splurging and had money to do so. Except the hard disk - it’s a few years old, I think. I remember when I installed the predecessor of my current GPU. I put the computer on the floor, and my nephew was crawling in the way, curious. Nowadays my nephew has a stubby beard, and he’s taller than me. My old case was even older. It had a hole, where I glued cardboard. That hole used to hold a 3½ floppy disk drive. It saw the predecessor of that GPU I mentioned above, that I bought in 2004.

I don’t like the precedent that Collective Shout set, but this is a VERY positive side effect. Love to see it.

I have no idea what you’re trying to say here. For budget cards especially the modern reality is that upscaling will likely be a necessary evil, so looking at upscaling performance is looking at actual performance. But even beyond that, the video includes performance comparisons between native and the various upscaling modes to show what you can expect and whether those gains from DLSS/FSR are worth it.

I played this game through early release and it is a piece of art. Heavy heavy Black Mesa vibes, except survival crafting. It took me and my friend months to get through all the content, and there were still pieces we didn’t touch. The map is gargantuan, progression is pretty straightforward. There were only a couple times we floundered and mostly that was due to us taking a break for a few days and forgetting where to go on the massive map. From a qol standpoint the only thing the game needs is a working map with better visualizations on where locations and objectives are. It is seriously worth the money, full stop.

Another great performing UE5 title, with a Mostly Negative rating. Seems like the Chinese are review bombing though, partly for the performance, but also that people got Deluxe Edition skins with even though they bought the Standard Edition, so they wasted their money by getting the Deluxe Edition? Or lower price outside of China? Maybe something about the time period it’s set in. I’m not really sure. 2k English reviews, 67% positive, still not great, but better.

So if you ever played Jacksmith you might understand the forging mechanic in this game… The premise is that: you forge your own weapon, quality depends on how good you do at the minigame. When you die you drop that weapon and have to recover it. I watched my friend struggle to play it because he didn’t play jacksmith and making a weapon was infuriating to watch. Then he set off to walk somewhere, kill some mobs, got killed, lost his weapon. Struggled to make a new one that was shittier than the first one, set out to recover the first weapon and died. Lost the second weapon to make the third and at this point he ragequit and deleted the game. Who thought people would enjoy the part where they lose their stuff that they just struggled to get? Boggles the mind

I think a further distinction should be made when a game has hundreds of devs. When you get that big, most people become cogs in a machine, which is pretty corporate. Definitely requires more fine-tuning to get a good definition going, but “small indie” at least seems to cover what most people currently just call “indie.” at least.
