I clicked on this link to just poke around and as usual YouTube thought I was getting ready to do a deep dive into alt right dog shit. There’s already suggested videos of how Canada has fallen apart but only ambiguously pointing to just the last 10 years. Anyways highly suggest people not even click the link if they don’t want to spend time pruning your algo. YouTube is especially bad for it since you can’t block anything.

To shut our governments up, they’re allowing a small amount in. Netanyahu and his allies in the Knesset are even apologizing to their citizens for it. Netanyahu defends Gaza aid resumption, acknowledges step stemmed from allies’ pressure PM stresses need to avoid bad optics of starvation; dozens of trucks said ready to enter; far-right parties divided on move, but neither threatens to exit in protest (…) Israel’s “greatest friends in the world,” he said, including senators but without mentioning specific nationalities, had said there was “one thing we cannot stand. We cannot accept images of hunger, mass hunger. We cannot stand that. We will not be able to support you.” Netanyahu said the situation had been approaching a “red line” and a “dangerous point,” but it was not clear if he was referring to the crisis in Gaza or the potential loss of support from allies.

I only got a nickel and quarter with King Charles on the last weekend, among a literal handful of change. There are a lot of years of QEII coins out there, though. She’s going to still be in circulation for a many years, yet.

At the end of the day, rent prices are driven by house prices. If rents become too high compared to owning, people just buy. The current barrier is the upfront cost, but… The property taxes I propose will drop the current value of homes through the floor. Some highly inefficient homes may actually have a zero or negative value, because they would cost too much in tax each month for anyone to want to buy. They would be scooped up by developers who can make them affordable by building enough units on that property in order to bring the tax per unit down to something people would pay. Given that the house prices would drop so significantly, so would rent prices across the board. There isn’t actually a lack of land anywhere in Canada, even our most populated city cores haven’t hit the densities that would prevent further growth. There also isn’t actually a lack of housing, as I said elsewhere there are more bedrooms in Canada than there are people. We just need policies which incentive people to use them efficiently. And the government controlling all rentals is an option, but do you really think they’re going to keep everything 100% repaired and up to date for everyone? This is going to be a pain point under both options, and I’d rather be able to take private landlord to court to get something fixed than try to take the government itself to court.

Hoekstra is just another Nazi fuck, feigning outrage. Weird to make him ambassador to Canada, but we’ll continue to go our own way and ignore the ravings.

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ca/post/44343977 Before the Usual Time is a short book (180 pages) that spans multiple indigenous cultures. I appreciated getting a taste of each of the authors’ experiences and cultures, and the poems are approachable for those new to poetry. The stories are inventive and the writing is excellent. I’d highly recommend it! Montreal’s roads are mostly paid for by property taxes, sales tax and business taxes. Cars are actually a burden and the city would do better and could drastically reduce spending on road maintenance if it increased transit and bike infrastructure. It’d also help with congestion.

Takeover the complete control of the car? Maybe not complete control, but maybe taking away breaks yes: https://www.wired.com/2015/07/hackers-remotely-kill-jeep-highway/ Miller and Valasek’s full arsenal includes functions that at lower speeds fully kill the engine, abruptly engage the brakes, or disable them altogether. The most disturbing maneuver came when they cut the Jeep’s brakes, leaving me frantically pumping the pedal as the 2-ton SUV slid uncontrollably into a ditch.

It happens to states that feel they are the ones providing a nation all the wealth but get an unbalanced return of benefits from the nation. So someone gets the idea that the state would thrive, economically, if they were able to spend their earnings on themselves, as though the nation is holding them back. Applying common logic, though, most people don’t acknowledge any of the pros for all of the cons. But there are some—imagine a nationalist mindset for their state/ region if you will—that think it’s the right thing to do because the current setup is “unfair”.

Fuck that. Let the bastards suffer. Keep finding new markets and do not return. We don’t need their business or the influence that comes with it. They are not trustworthy in any way.

At this point, conservatism is nothing more than coming up with fantastically irrational fever dreams of non-existent issues, and then getting mad about it.

And exactly what did we do with the First Nations lands in Southern Ontario? There is absolutely no doubt that the environment would be collateral damage. It always has, always will be. The trade-off will never go away. But the Rideau Canal system was done in an environmentally friendly manner, and so too could this venture.
