cross-posted from: https://lemmy.sdf.org/post/35567618 Archived Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney signalled he hopes Canada will be able to sign on to a major European defence rearmament plan by July 1, a step toward reducing the country’s dependency on the United States for weapons and munitions. He made the remarks on CBC’s Power & Politics following the speech from the throne, which committed his government to joining ReArm Europe. The speech did not set out a timeline, but Carney said he wants to move aggressively. “Seventy-five cents of every dollar of capital spending for defence goes to the United States. That’s not smart,” Carney told host David Cochrane. […]

American here, and I’ve said it before but it applies to everywhere. Minimum wage needs to be based on a calculation that incorporates data from poverty rates, inflation, and cost of living in your local area. And it should recalculate AT LEAST once a year, but preferably quarterly or even monthly.
  • Wow a 2.5% increase, meanwhile rent is up 50% the last few years.

The median rent is up is up 375 bucks since 2020 Min wage is up 520 dollars per month for a full time worker since 2020. Of course rent isn’t the only thing that’s gone up.
  • They should just change that to maximum wage, see what happens

  • For a 2000 hour work year, that's an increase of $900.

If you were paying the average rent on a studio of $1456 (from CMHC, Oct 2024) and your landlord increased rent in January by the legal maximum of 3% you’d be spending an extra $524.16 in 2025 right there. And with this wage increase only coming into effect in June that $900 is only an extra $525 for 2025. Enjoy that extra 7¢/month, best of luck finding something you can actually buy with that. Are 5¢ candies still a thing?

I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to secure our border if the USA decided on military invasion. Nevertheless, appeasement is not the way.

[image: 8f2d8ee7-cf7b-4422-86ac-874aeb83e768.jpeg] this paragraph is from Lion of Jordan, the bio of king Hussein. Hussein was secretly meeting with israelis to negotiate giving away Palestinian lands in order to get a peace deal - without consulting the PLO. I’m not saying PLO is innocent, I’m saying no one’s innocent and that the Palestinians are paying the price for all of it.

This ^. Our shaw bundle started out about $95 and year over year they increased fees, until it hit $225 a month. At that point I dropped everything and went with a lesser plan at $110. Bell Mobile did the same with my wife’s phone plan, no phone since it was paid for, but $100 a month for terrible plan. We switched to Koodo for $35 a month and more data. Bell called and said they could do $85 a month, lol, why would I pay $50 more for no gain. Both situations the companies could have had a loyal customer but they had to let greed eliminate a paying customer.

Looks like the fentanyl tariffs are toast. The steel, aluminum, and auto tariffs are still in force (different justification).

Great reframing device put forth by the author, even though the article hammers it a bit much for my tastes. The larger question however remains unanswered: How do we motivate people to do their part in keeping everyone safe? The suggestions in the article have either already backfired (vaccination mandates at schools, works, etc), or are only really effective if a disease has already started to claim lives (the “fear” method the author rightfully dislikes). I’m honestly wondering how we can ever get that antivax genie back into the bottle it escaped from. Perhaps letting some virusses run rampant every now and again to remind the public of the risks is the price we’ll need to pay

Let’s be real, there’s a lot of abusive employers in Canada especially within industries that cater to the foreign “education” programs. Some security companies in BC have very suspect hiring and payroll practices. We need to clean house and see where we stand first.

The changing world of Canada’s abysmal per capita economic performance behind only Luxembourg, so we can no longer afford food, given all the money we printed to artificially inflate GDP and bail out home values.
