Unless things have changed since my family left the farm, crop insurance is only enough to cover the lost cost of inputs, it’s not going to be enough to turn a profit. No farmer wants their crop to fail. They want a good harvest that they can earn some profit from.

Didn’t think I’d see support for Citizens United here, but I guess anything is possible… Anyway, publicly traded corporations are subject to incentive structures that the market has created. Corporations are run by a CEO, but the CEO is elected by the board. The board, in turn, is elected by the shareholders. The shareholders are mostly mutual funds, which are funded by ordinary people. If the CEO makes decisions which clearly reduce profitability, then they will be fired by the board. If the board doesn’t fire them, then the mutual fund managers will vote to replace the board. If the mutual funds don’t replace the board members, their funds won’t beat the market, and their investors will pull out and put their money elsewhere. And if none of them do any of that then another grocery store will raise prices as much as demand allows, increasing profits relative to the more “noble” grocery corporation, which will allow them to take on an influx of investment capital which they can then use to expand their market share and gain a competitive advantage over the their competition. So ultimately, the “greedy” one is Bob, a middle manager in a nondescript office park in suburban Iowa who wants to invest his retirement funds somewhere with good returns so that he doesn’t have to work until the day he dies. This is why Citizens United was a bad thing. It expanded the ability of inhuman, profit-maximizing machines to influence politics.

Pretty much where I’m at. We absolutely should do everything we can to minimize the impact of American volatility to our economy, but damaging our economy more than necessary to do so is counterproductive. Stringing on the bullshit until we have a clear exit plan is the smart move, distasteful as that may be.

Karma Co-op almost went out of business in like 2019. Not sure how they survived. The article just sounds like an ad for Karma Co-op, but at least it’s for a good cause.

Conservatives aren’t much better but we would’ve likely seen a different change of approach on how things are ran. You’re right. Poilievre would’ve agreed to Trump’s demands immediately to make them all richer and fuck the rest of us. Carney isn’t good, but the Cons would’ve been much worse. Don’t pull the same old “but Kamala” bullshit argument in here.

Throughout the spring federal election campaign, Mark Carney as Liberal leader repeatedly vowed to “eliminate” interprovincial trade barriers and create “free trade by Canada Day.” But Canada’s internal trade barriers won’t all be eliminated by then — not even all the federal ones. Canada’s supply management system for dairy products, which sets provincial production quotas, will remain. Quebec also has language requirements that will stay in place.

This. The DTS was not a tax on American or foreign digital services, but all of them. Home grown digital services companies were certainly lobbying to get this killed, too.

Canadian mining companies have a shitty track record when they operate outside of Canada. I hope Orla gets nailed to the wall.

The Canadian Conspiracy goes back even farther than we had feared! [image: d6f854fd-e87f-454e-8a01-4155b809d175.webp] Ahyonwaeghs https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/john-brant-ahyonwaeghs I must contact Nicholas Cage NOW!!! https://www.haudenosauneeconfederacy.com/ https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/iroquois Haudenosaunee communities like Six Nations, Akwesasne (Kanyen’kehà:ka) and Kahnawake (Kanyen’kehà:ka) outside of Montréal are among the largest and most populous reserves in Canada. In April 2024, Six Nations of the Grand River’s enumerated total band membership was 29,024, with 12,834 living in the community. Akwesasne had 13,412 members with 10,217 people living in the community. Kahnawake had 11,715 members and 8,126 people in the community. [image: 0b74837a-4221-4785-b5b6-fe6a99a13a51.webp] I just came up with a devious plan to bring freedom to Canada once and for all. How about we do the classic US thing of destabilize a vulnerable semi-democratic society by funneling arms to seperatist groups placed into a minority against their will, but in this case we make the weapons so devastating they will rip the fabric of Canada apart. Here is what the CIA can do, we start funneling illegal good quality FREE healthcare (not legal in the US, also destroys their private healthcare market, double whammy) over the border to indigenous organizations, we also start providing high quality subsidizations for education to advance indigenous students along with career coaching for indigenous students nearing university age to help get them into professional degrees at a higher rate thus gaining control slowly over the technocratic aspects of government functions, further we funnel money from stupid tasteless rightwing donors to actually good indigenous artists to “inflate” the value of their kickass art in the art market of Canada… Can you see where my masterplan is going!!! https://slrpnk.net/post/22448253 how deep into the past does the conspiracy of my neighbors go?

These are all key figures in the establishment of the state of Israel. “We walked outside, Ben-Gurion accompanying us. Allon repeated his question, What is to be done with the Palestinian population. ’ Ben-Gurion waved his hand in a gesture which said 'Drive them out!” - Yitzhak Rabin This is the Zionist goal… it couldn’t be any clearer than it is.

Montreal-based firm LPC Avocats claims some 500,000 customers across Canada received an email in April 2024 saying they had won a boat through the promotion. Superior Court Justice Donald Bisson ruled last week that the class action can move forward, but limited it to Quebec residents because the case hinges on that province’s consumer protection laws. Lawyer Joey Zukran says his clients should be awarded the boat and trailer they were told they won, plus damages. He says the Quebec law states that merchants and not customers should be held responsible for errors. A spokesperson for Tim Hortons says the company apologized last year to the customers who received the email, and declined to comment further because the case is before the courts.
