We asked Canadians to tell us more about how and why they are boycotting U.S. goods and travel. Here's what you told us.

No travel to the US. Not buying american groceries. Focusing on Canadian foods at grocery store. If we don’t have a Canadian or ABA option we do without. If the labeling is ambiguous or doubtful we do without. Won’t shop american brands. I go out of my way to skip home depot or lowes for Canadian Tire and Home Hardware. I routinely look up corporate ownership before making purchases. Amazon is dead to me. I switched old habits like dog food. Now i’m buying a Canadian made food from a Canadian owned store. The list goes on.

This is for life. I’m never going back.

          Confidently incorrect.

Canada has Canada West, Viberg and a few others. US has RedWing and Danner.

As for electronics, that’s a pretty broad category, but for example in the Audio/Stereo fields, we have NAD, Bryston, Paradigm/Anthem, PSB, Totem, Verity etc… speakers, amplifiers, AVR processors etc…

The US list is even bigger.

Replacing USA with multiple countries is the safer option.

I am familiar with Canada West. They’re made in my city.

But what I was referring more to was mass market footwear, and the majority of those (regardless of where the HQ is) are made overseas, as is most clothing in general.

As for those electronics manufacturers, with very few exceptions, the components they assemble into their finished product are sourced outside of North America.

This is what we’ve been aiming for. And I hold a grudge too. I haven’t bought a Sony product for well over 20 years, and Samsung is going on 15 now. I’ve convinced multiple people to abandon Telus because they made an enemy of me about 25 years ago. I’m a crotchety bastard and I stick by my guns.

If the US gets another dollar out of me, it won’t be for lack of trying to fuck them.

Let’s make Canada West mass market baby! Finest boots I’ve ever bought and worth every penny. Shame they aren’t easy to find retailers, but I’ll always go out of my way to find them.

As for making our own capacitors, resistors, transistors etc… It makes no sense to build everything within your country. It is important to have a diversity globally so supply chains can be resilient, especially in light of a growing deglobalization trend.

                    Elbows up!

You don’t need to try and fuck them. They are doing that to themselves with more skill, urgency and depth of consequence than anything we can come up with. Just watch with wonder and amazement as America descends into irrelevance then obscurity.

This is the one I deal with the most as well, but it’s a lot easier to do in the summer than in the winter. How grocers source their produce will determine the effectiveness of our boycotts.

The rootkit thing absolutely infuriated me. The self-righteous gall of installing that shit with autorun.inf and sending info back sent me right over the edge. To this day, people are still surprised how brazen that was when they look it up.

We had a big birthday bash (with multiple family members attending) planned for end of November in Las Vegas.

Cancelled it immediately after their election results came in - stupidity doesn’t deserve our money.

Routinely lookup company ownership and review product origin/manufacturing details when shopping.

(Also continuing boycott of Loblaws-owned stores, products, etc. - because screw Galin…)

I’m not fully boycotting them, but they are my grocer of last resort. My #1 is a local ethnic grocer with 3 locations. #2 are local bakeries and independants. #3 are sobeys/metro owned and last is Weston.

                                I’m blessed with options.

I have no intention of traveling to the states and I avoid buying American products. But I feel like a bit of a hypocrite because I still use American streaming services and watch American films in the theatre

As an expat, the availability of physical American products in the UK is limited, so the digital services have been on my “screw the Yankees” list:

                                    Service Alternative
Amazon Just buying shit from other sites
AWS, Azure Self-hosting, and kicking up a fuss at work to push us out of the cloud
Microsoft Windows Linux baby! (To be fair, I was already on that train)
Google DuckDuckGo, though it’s still american, I can’t find an actually useful non-US search engine
Android I might make the jump to Graphene or e/OS for my Fairphone
                                    Steam GOG

I’m also avoiding US brands at the grocery store, but that’s probably easier here than back home.

For search engines, try swisscows.com. Results filter NSFW, so good to use at work. Also, SearxNG, if you want a federated engine.

How do you find the correct sites to buy whatever specific shit from?

Do you do any streaming? High seas for that, I guess?

Vessi shoes. They’re the most comfortable shoes in the world. I haven’t bought another brand in years.
