If we reduce immigration there would be more opportunities for the meaningful employment of disabled Canadians. How many people sit all day in an office or work from home? I know people in their 20’s who outright lie about medical issues just so they can leech off the accommodation systems we have in our workplaces.

For example several people at a place I used to work had “bad backs” and required special chairs and extra work from home days. That may be the case when it’s one or two people but when 15 people all need the same accommodations at the same time and they all happen to be from the same Indian community, it’s obvious they are cheating the system.

We need fewer people with no vested interest in this country and more training and education opportunities for Canadians.

Know what’s not a “good look”, I and many others like me don’t qualify for the disability tax credit because we don’t need constant care, so we live well below poverty. Singles, those with families, old, young doesn’t matter. This means we also don’t qualify for the disability tax benefit that our government is touting as a saving grace for us cripples. No one cares. Not our fellow citizens, politicians, doctors. No one.

But we can MAID as soon as we can fill out the fucking paperwork.

Disabled people in Canada are living in a fascist state that would prefer them dead and no one cares to help change that.

don’t qualify for the disability tax credit because we don’t need constant care

Constant care isn’t a prerequisite, but it does help with eligibility.

“You may be eligible for the DTC if a medical practitioner certifies that you have a severe and prolonged impairment in 1 of the categories, significant limitations in 2 or more categories, or receive therapy to support a vital function.”

        "Combine 2 or more categories

        Cumulative effect of significant limitations

This combines the effects of 2 impairments when 1 impairment does not meet the criteria for a marked restriction (does not include life-sustaining therapy)."

This should be quite easy to get if you have one or more impairments, but you need a doctor who isn’t a total ass about completing paperwork.

If that doesn’t work, there are lawyers who specifically practice to help get people benefits.

so we live well below poverty

Then the DST likely won’t make a difference, since it only reduces your tax burden, which might already be zero (or already gives you a payout).

ODSP (if you’re in Ontario) would be more appropriate in that situation, and pays out considerably more than $200 a month.

We do need better support for people living with a disability, but we currently do have (a mixed bag of) options.

Contact the CPP folks immediately on my behalf please. I and my family would really appreciate your assistance since you are so knowledgeable about our circumstances.

Or find me a Doctor that isn’t a “complete ass” because to repeat myself I do not qualify. I am physically unable to work but I am also unable to feed my kids. Yet my government could care less and they are the ones responsible for my income. Doctors don’t give a shit cause I can walk…sort of and my fellow citizens would prefer for me to hire a lawyer than help me fight for a better life for my family.

I should not have to fight for respect or dignity simply because I am cripple through no fault of my own.

This is not even mentionioning what folks with mental health problems do. Where do they fit in this equation?

My comment wasn’t a personal attack on you, and I’m sorry if it came out that way.

It was more to the point that there are several options available for people with disabilities, and sometimes it does require either the cooperation of a doctor or a lawyer who specializes in this sort of thing.

Yes, you might lose a cut of what you’re going to receive, but it’s better than the frustration that you are going through.

Believe me, I’ve been through it. My wife’s doctor was a complete ass, and it took years and years for them to finally be willing to sign the paperwork the disability tax credit.

And then when it came time to renew, this same doctor sat on their asses until it lapsed, and then she had to go through the entire process again!

It shouldn’t have been like that. And if that’s what you’re going through, I can completely empathize with you.

I have another family member who had to get a lawyer in order to get ODSP, despite decades of suffering and being unable to work. It was only through the lawyer that they were able to get approved very quickly, whereas when they did it themselves, they were constantly being rejected.

Maybe there’s a loophole that lawyers know about that we don’t, but whatever it is, they do get the job done.

I do hope that things get easier for you and your family.

Yes us too. We were extremely lucky as our Doctor did not make us jump through any hoops and was very helpful. Without him I am pretty sure it would have been much harder. We do not need constant care for our ailments. So far it’s been 5yrs for me and over 10 for my wife that we have not yet had to renew.

You need a different doctor, my wife has a mobility disability. She can walk, but slower. She qualifies.

Agreed. However I live in a very rural area. The closest walk in clinic even is a four hour drive away one way. I have one option and I only have that doctor because they felt bad when I got this rare Cancer and didn’t have a family doc. I don’t have money to pay an online clinic or to travel. I have what I have which is the case for many Canadians right now.
